What Is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?

Eyes are a prominent facial feature. It is the surrounding skin, rather than the eyes themselves, which convey emotion. The tissue, muscle, fat, hair, and lashes all contribute to the wide array of expressions. The aging process can cause unwanted changes in expression, causing you to look permanently fatigued and older than you really are. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is designed to restore a more youthful appearance to your eyes. Patients may have the procedure performed on the upper lids, the lower lids, or both.

Age, sun exposure, and hereditary factors all contribute to wrinkles, deep lines, and puffiness around the eyes. These changes in appearance can cause emotional distress and sometimes even visual impairment. The staff at Parkcrest Plastic Surgery is dedicated to helping you feel better about the way you look. Each year, hundreds of patients from the St. Louis area entrust their eyelid surgery to us. Our board-certified physicians have vast experience with eyelid surgery in St. Louis.

What Is an Eyelid Surgery Procedure?

Eyelid surgery may be performed under general anesthesia or a local anesthesia with sedation. The type of anesthesia is based on patient preference as well as the complexity of the procedure. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is performed on an outpatient basis at a surgical center, many times with an overnight stay.

The doctors at Parkcrest Plastic Surgery stay up to date on the latest procedures for eyelid surgery. Some of the traditional and newer techniques include the following:

  • Traditional Blepharoplasty: An incision is made in the crease of the upper lid toward the temples. Once healed, it is normally not noticeable when the eye is open. On the lower lid, the incision is made along the lash line, toward the temples, and is hidden by lashes when healed.
  • The Transconjunctival Approach: This is a newer technique for lower eyelid surgery, involving an incision inside the lower lid. Fat can be removed through this incision and may allow the skin to redrape and tighten.
  • Laser Resurfacing: This is a nonsurgical alternative that may delay the need for a surgical blepharoplasty. It results in significant tightening of the skin but will not affect the fat around the eyes and may even accentuate it. It can also be performed along with a blepharoplasty.

When you meet with us at Parkcrest Plastic Surgery, please share any questions you may have about which procedure is right for you. Our detailed information includes procedure steps, possible risks, recovery times, and eyelid surgery before and after photos. We are also open about eyelid surgery costs and financing options.

What Does Eyelid Surgery Recovery Entail?

It is important to arrange for care after an eyelid surgery. Someone must drive you home and be available to assist you for the first 24 hours or more.

Common blepharoplasty side effects include swollen eyelids and bruising under the eye for the first few days, although these discomforts may last for up to three weeks. You also need to avoid strong sunlight during your recovery because the skin around your eyes will be even more sensitive than usual. You should wear a sun cream with a very high SPF, sunglasses, and hats for six to eight weeks after your eyelid surgery. Most patients return to work in 10 to 14 days.

At the Parkcrest Plastic Surgery office, Dr. David A. Caplin, and Dr. Patricia McGuire offer plastic and reconstructive surgery to patients across Eastern Missouri including St. Charles, Chesterfield, O’Fallon, St. Peters, and Creve Coeur. Contact the Parkcrest Plastic Surgery office today to schedule your eyelid surgery consultation!
