What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as breast implants or augmentation mammoplasty, involves the insertion of implants to enlarge small breasts, underdeveloped breasts, or breasts that have decreased in size after childbirth. Our wonderful patients also choose breast augmentation for reconstruction after breast surgery or to balance breasts that are uneven in size.

What Is the Procedure for Breast Augmentation?

A breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis, usually under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will start with an incision, which will be the entry point for your breast implant. An implant consists of a smooth or textured outer shell made of silicone filled with either saline or silicone gel. The surgeon will place the implant behind the breast tissue or underneath the muscles of the chest wall, depending on the individual needs and desires of the patient.

When the implant is placed submuscularly under the breast, there is a lower chance of contracture (contraction of the tissue capsule surrounding the implant), and mammography is more reliable. There is also less risk of visible or palpable implant edges. However, in some cases, the implant may have a more natural appearance when placed above the muscle, under the breast tissue. Your surgeon can help you decide which placement and type of implant will work best for you.

The physicians at Parkcrest Plastic Surgery are involved in a number of research studies evaluating new breast implants and implant safety. We want you to be confident when you choose to undergo breast augmentation in St. Louis that our surgeons are up to date on the latest procedures and implant options for breast augmentation.

Patient Reviews

"My experience has been nothing short of amazing- from my consult to post op. I had a breast augmentation on 4/13.

From the get go, Dr. McGuire answered all my questions, she gave me exactly what I wanted and has followed up with me very closely post op. Kaysie, her medical assistant, was always on top of my emails and the communication was great! I knew from the moment I met Dr. McGuire that I wanted her to do my procedure. She was straight forward, did not sugar coat anything and listened to what I envisioned before offering what she would recommend for me. She made me so comfortable during surgery, everyone did! I cannot rave enough about this office! These gals changed my life 💕" - Jordyn R.

How Is Breast Implant Size Determined?

Breast implants have two shapes: round and teardrop (anatomical). If you want a round curve in the upper part of your breasts, then a round implant may be right for you. Your other option, the teardrop shape, creates a gentle slope, resulting in a fuller upper area. It is also known as an anatomical implant. Another consideration before your breast augmentation is the width, which determines the amount of “cleavage” between your breasts and the outer curves.

Realistic expectations of this procedure are important. Women often think of breast size in terms of bra cup size. If you are a size “A” and wish to be a size “C,” there must be adequate existing breast tissue coverage; otherwise, you will be warned of visible or palpable implant edges and other possible risks when having a breast augmentation performed.

What Does Breast Augmentation Recovery Entail?

When you undergo breast augmentation, you must have someone drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery. You will experience some pain, which can be controlled with medication. Some tightness in the breast area is also normal as your body adjusts to the implants.

You can move about freely after surgery, but you should wear a bra at all times (except when showering) during the first few weeks. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions about which activities to limit or avoid during the healing process.
