Meet Dr. Caplin

Dr. David Caplin, a Board-certified plastic surgeon, is a native of New York City. He received his undergraduate degree with Honors from Kenyon College and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. He completed his training in general surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and his residency in plastic surgery at Barnes Hospital. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

He is a member of numerous societies, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Lipoplasty Society, and the American Association for Endoscopic Hand Surgery, among others. He is a recipient of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s "Certificate of Advanced Education in Cosmetic Surgery." He has also been consistently chosen as one of "America’s Top Surgeons", "Top Doctors" and Best Doctors" for many years. Dr. Caplin was honored by the Missouri State Medical Association as the recipient of their 2010 Community Service Award for his extensive work with medical charities including the Gateway To Hope breast cancer program which he co-founded six years ago.
Dr. Caplin

His areas of special interest include facial cosmetic surgery, all aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast, liposuction, and body contouring. His practice attracts patients from around the country as well as from outside of the United States. Dr. Caplin’s interest in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast has led to his involvement in a number of national studies to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new forms of breast implants. These include the MemoryShape (CPG) implant study in which he has been participating as a principal investigator since 2002 and has one of the longest and largest clinical experiences with this procedure in North America. Patients commonly refer to these as Gummy Bear Implants.  He also performs less invasive cosmetic surgical procedures such as laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo) and numerous procedures for facial rejuvenation including fat grafting. His publications range from chapters in textbooks on techniques for rejuvenation of the aging neck and face to  numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals on a wide variety of procedures. He also has a long-standing interest in endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery which is a technique he helped pioneer. Among his innovations is a new surgical technique for patients with Axillary Hyperhidrosis (severe underarm sweating).  Performed under local anesthesia in the office utilizing the SmartLipo device he has been able, in many cases,  to dramatically reduce the symptoms associated with this condition.

He is on staff at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, Missouri Baptist Hospital, Des Peres Hospital, and St. Louis Surgical Center.

He has a long-standing appointment as a Clinical Instructor in Surgery at Washington University and has helped teach many of the Plastic Surgery residents who have trained there over the past twenty years.

Karyn Brown R.N. has specialized in plastic surgery for over  20  years and has extensive experience evaluating and treating patients with injections of Botox, Juvederm, Restylane and other injectables all under the supervision of Dr. David Caplin. Karyn is available by appointment for complimentary consultations for patients interested in injectables and can also perform evaluations for those patients who are interested in cosmetic surgery but would like more information before they schedule an appointment with Dr. Caplin.

HIGHLY-COHESIVE BREAST IMPLANTS (GUMMY BEAR IMPLANTS)
Dr. Caplin has been a principal clinical investigator for the MemoryShape (CPG) Cohesive Gel implant since 2002 and has one of the longest and largest clinical experiences with this procedure in North America. WITH THE FDA APPROVAL OF THE ALLERGAN 410 IMPLANTS HE BECOMES ONE OF THE FEW SURGEONS IN THE COUNTRY WHO CAN OFFER THE 410 IMPLANTS AS WELL AS ALL OF THE STYLES OF THE MEMORYSHAPE  (CPG) IMPLANTS TO HIS PATIENTS. Mentor MemoryShape Cohesive Gel implants have been used with great success in Europe and many other countries for many years but are currently only available to surgeons who are investigators in this study. Although not all patients are appropriate candidates for this implant, it has unique qualities including its form-stabilized anatomic shape and its resistance to implant leakage. The distinguishing factor is that the implant is a "soft solid". If the Cohesive implant is cut in half the implant maintains its shape.  He has been very involved in creating the training materials which will be used to teach plastic surgeons around the country once these implants have been approved by the FDA. He recently co-authored a paper documenting the initial 6-year clinical experience with the MemoryShape (CPG) implants in the United States which documented the safety and effectiveness of these implants.

Dr. Caplin has  been chosen as a principal investigator for an upcoming clinical trial utilizing a size-adjustable silicone gel implant. The size of the implant can be increased or decreased simply by injecting small volumes of saline in the office. These implants have been used extensively in other countries with great success. For more information regarding this implant, or any of the other implant studies in which Dr. Caplin is an investigator, please contact the office.

SMARTLIPO  (Laser Assisted Liposuction) and CELLULITE TREATMENT
Dr. Caplin has extensive experience with the SmartLipo technique which can usually be performed under local anesthesia in the office. In most cases, this procedure has allowed his patients to return to most daily activities almost immediately with less pain and recovery time. This device can also be used to treat localized areas of CELLULITE in many patients. Dr. Caplin has instructed plastic surgeons from around the country in this technique. Regarding Pre-op and Post-op Photos, all patients are different so before and after photos of other patients may not accurately represent the results you might expect to achieve. However, photos are available at the time of your consultation and we are happy to put you in touch with patients who have undergone the surgery you might be considering.

Void where prohibited. Both the referring patient and the referred friend must undergo breast augmentation surgery using MENTOR® Breast Implants; breast reconstruction surgeries do not qualify. The Mentor Refer a Friend Program is not available where (1) either patient’s surgery is reimbursable, in whole or in part, by any insurance program, private or public, including but not limited to Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE; (2) either patient is a licensed health care professional or a staff member of a Mentor customer. Patients are encouraged to select a surgeon of their own choosing after conducting their own investigation into the particular surgeon’s training, education and experience. This communication should not be construed as an express or implied endorsement of any surgeon by Mentor Worldwide, LLC.

Important Safety Information:
The MENTOR® collection of Breast Implants is indicated for breast augmentation—in women who are at least 22 years old for MENTOR® MemoryGel® Breast Implants and at least 18 years old for Saline Breast Implants—or for breast reconstruction.

Breast implant surgery should not be performed in women:
• With active infection anywhere in their body
• With existing cancer or pre-cancer of their breast who have not received adequate treatment for those conditions
• Who are currently pregnant or nursing

Safety and effectiveness have not been established in patients with autoimmune diseases (for example, lupus and scleroderma), a weakened immune system, conditions that interfere with wound healing and blood clotting, or reduced blood supply to breast tissue. Patients with a diagnosis of depression or other mental health disorders should wait until resolution or stabilization of these conditions prior to undergoing breast implantation surgery.

There are risks associated with breast implant surgery. You should be aware that breast implants are not lifetime devices and breast implantation is likely not a one-time surgery. You may need additional unplanned surgeries on your breasts because of complications or unacceptable cosmetic outcomes. Many of the changes to your breast following implantation are irreversible (cannot be undone), and breast implants may affect your ability to breast-feed, either by reducing or eliminating milk production.

The most common complications with MENTOR® MemoryGel® Breast Implants include reoperation, capsular contracture, asymmetry, breast mass/cyst and breast pain. A lower risk of complication is implant rupture, which is most often silent (meaning neither you nor your doctor will know you have a rupture). MRI screenings are recommended three years after initial implant surgery and then every two years after to detect silent rupture.

The most common complications with MENTOR® Saline-filled Breast Implants include reoperation, implant removal, capsular contracture, wrinkling, breast pain and implant deflation. Detailed information regarding the risks and benefits associated with MENTOR® Breast Implants is provided in two brochures—Important Information for Augmentation Patients about MENTOR® MemoryGel® Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants and Saline-Filled Breast Implants, Making an Informed Decision—available from your surgeon or on line at www.mentorwwllc.com. It is important that you read and understand these brochures when considering MENTOR® Breast Implants.
